About the Author

John D. Daniels, the Samuel N. Friedland Chair of Executive Management at the University of Miami, received his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. His dissertation won first place in the award com­petition of the Academy of International Business. Since then he has been an active researcher. His articles have appeared in such leading journals as Academy of Management Journal, California Management Review, Columbia Journal of World Business, Journal of Business Research, Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, and Weltwirtschaftliches Archiv. On its thirtieth anniversary, Management International Review referred to him as "one of the most prolific American IB scholars." He has also served as president of the Academy of International Business and dean of its Fellows. He also served as chairperson of the international division of the Academy of Management. He has worked and lived a year or longer in seven different countries, worked shorter stints in about thirty other countries on six conti­nents, and has traveled in many more. His foreign work has been a combination of private sector, govern­mental, teaching, and research assignments. He was formerly director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (C1BER) at Indiana University and holder of the E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Chair at the University of Richmond.

 

Lee H. Radebaugh, is the KPMG Professor and Associate Director of the MBA Program at Brigham Young University. He received his MBA and doctorate from Indiana University. He taught at the Pennsylvania State University from 1972 to 1980. He also has been a visiting professor at Escuela de Administracion de Negocios para Graduados (ESAN), a graduate business school in Lima, Peru. In 1985, Professor Radebaugh was the James Cusator Wards visiting professor at Glasgow University, Scotland. His other books include International Accounting and Multinational Enterprises (John Wiley and Sons, 4th Edition) with S.J. Gray; Introduction to Business: International Dimensions (South-Western Publishing Company) with John D. Daniels; and seven books on Canada-U.S. trade and investment relations, with Earl Fry as co-editor. He has also published several other monographs and articles on international business and international account­ing in journals such as the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting, the Journal of International Business Studies, and the International Journal of Accounting. He is currently serving as Editor of the Journal of International Accounting Research. His primary teaching interests are international business and international accounting. He is an active member of the American Accounting Association, the European Accounting Association, and the Academy of International Business, having served on several committees as the president of the International Section of the AAA and as the secretary-treasurer of the AIB. He is a member of the Fellows of the Academy of International Business. He is also active with the local business community as past president of the World Trade Association of Utah and member of the District Export Council. In 1998, he was named International Person of the Year in the State of Utah and Outstanding International Educator of the International Section of the American Accounting Association.

 

Daniel P. Sullivan, an Associate Professor of Management at the Alfred Lerner College of Business of the University of Delaware, received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He researches a range of topics, including Globalization and Business, International Management, Global Strategy, Competitive Analysis, and Corporate Governance. His work on these topics has been published in leading scholarly journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies, Management International Review, Law and Society Review, and Academy of Management Journal. In addition, he has served on the editorial boards of Journal of International Business Studies and Management International Review. He has been honored for both his research and teaching, receiv­ing grants and winning awards for both activities while at the University of Delaware and, his for­mer affiliation, the A.B. Freeman School of Business of Tulane University. He has been awarded numerous teaching honors at the undergraduate, MBA, and EMBA levels–most notably, he was voted the Outstanding Teacher by the students of seven consecutive Executive MBA classes at the University of Delaware and Tulane University. He has taught, designed, and administered a range of graduate, undergraduate, and non-degree courses on topics spanning Globalization and Business, International Business Operations, International Management, Strategic Perspectives, Executive Leadership, and Corporate Strategy. In the United States, he has delivered lectures and courses at several uni­versity sites and company facilities. In addition, he has led courses in several foreign countries, including China, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Finally, he has worked with many managers and consulted with several multinational enterprises on issues of international business.

This book spoke to me on a different level. Living within the Christian world, we are being told not to doubt or ask questions. We’re told to have faith instead. This book helps me to live both in doubt and faith in the same breath. I feel known on a deep level by reading this. And I feel encouraged by Nate’s words. READ THIS BOOK PEOPLE!

Through the real and raw stories of his own pain, and that of his family, Nate invites you into a journey of wonder- where is God. In a world where suffering is to be avoided or numbed we are invited instead to walk in community into the chaos, trusting in the God who meets us there in the person of Jesus, who himself met us in our suffering: God with us.

A very well written book that keeps the "Christian-ese" at a bare minimum so that anyone can understand. There was so much that we could relate to and had questioned ourselves. We are not alone. God is with us when we have more that we can handle!

This book encourages us how to stay strong when we feel doubt and down in our life. The author felt like that sometimes and shares what we learned with us.Someone wrote on the barracks wall of Auschwitz this " There is Grace, though and wander , on the way, Only they are hard to see, hard to embrace,for those compelled to wander in the darkness". This is a book about finding God and Grace as we wander in a darkness that is more than we can handle. It's about the moments when we're so overwhelmed that we wander direction less towards unknown destinations. It's about those times when we wonder if the God who promises to guide us had run far ahead and left us behind to stumble in the darkness on our own.On page 26 it says " Your pain is real. Your suffering is legitimate. What you are facing is more than you can handle. " On page 35 it says " Paul- the one who was shipwrecked for the sake of the Gospel, whose faith was so strong that people were healed when they touched rags he used to wipe his brow, who converted guards while in jail, who brazeingly stood before rulers and confessed Jesus as Lord, said he despaired of life. He didn't just have a bad day. The pain was too great. He wanted to give up. He considered abandoning everything because it no longer seemed worth the struggle. It is when we are at our frailest that Christ's power can rest on us. When we can no longer keep going. When we're empty. Confused. Exhausted. "On page 75 it says " Suffering is a reality whenever our ability to flourish is stolen from us. There is an unspoken pressure to dance, smile, and thank God for his faithfulness. This is what good Christians do, isn't it?On page 89 he asks" Why was the temptation to be like God so compelling to Eve? Is it because the anxiety and fear of not knowing what tomorrow would bring subtly gnawed at her just before she fell asleep. "On page 132 it says " What kind of God demands that action as a test of faith? What kind of God forces the the choices between the God who promised you an unimaginable legacy or the son you prayed for. Even if it was all a simple test, it is cruel in the highest sense."On page 167 it says " the one young child too light to quickly expedite his own death hung at the end of the rope for a hellish amount of time. He remained for more than a half an hour , lingering between life and death. We were forced to look at him at close range. For God's sake, where is God? "On page 179 it says " God doesn't doesn't just offer a cure. God brings wholeness. Jesus didn't stop Peter from disowning him, but he did restore him. Jesus didn't end Mary's pain as she watched her son die, but he did see that was cared for. " On page 189 it says " our heavenly father adopts us as sons and daughters, and he wraps his robe around iur shoulders ."Disclosure of Material Connection. I had never heard of Nate Pyle ... I was drawn in by the name of the book. There are many days where I feel like life is more than I can handle. I wasn't a fan of this book. Wasn't a fan of his writing style. I felt like I was lost through most of it. Felt like it jumped from here to there wit no connection between the stories or thoughts. I wanted to like the book. Honestly I don't think there is really an answer for when life just feels like it is failing miserably. I'm not sure that any book or any conversation can really answer the questions that plague many of us when we say that life is more than we can handle.
