In Development as Freedom, Amartya Sen tells us that the process of development is best understood as expansion of the freedoms that people enjoy in five spheres: political, economic, social, transparency (in the sense that important information is available to the public), and personal security. Each of these types of freedoms reinforce one another and contribute to outcomes such as higher incomes, better health, and longevity. Sen quotes Peter Bauer, an iconoclast in the development field, as saying that "I regard the extension of the range of choice, that is, an increase in the range of effective alternatives open to the people, as the principle objective and criterion of economic development; and I judge a measure principally by its probable effects on the range of alternatives open to individuals."Sen points out that markets are not simply a means to an end but rather a fundamental freedom. All people want to enter into exchanges with others, and this is how people everywhere behave unless they are prevented from doing so. Sen shows that markets are not an expression of rapacious self-interest but rather are dependent on virtues such as trust and rectitude. Seen in this light, market exchanges are an expression of deep human needs. Yet Sen realizes that markets have limitations and he argues for non-market decisions to optimally provide for education, health care, protection of the environment, and prevention of the grossest inequalities in income distribution.As an illustration of the interrelationships between the different types of freedoms, and between these freedoms and economic outcomes, Sen explains the Asian economic crises of the late 1990s as partly a result of a lack of transparency: that is, a lack of public participation in reviewing financial and business arrangements. Had they been able to, members of the public likely would have demanded greater transparency and the crises might have been averted; however, authoritarian political arrangements prevented effective demands for transparency. And, once the crises struck, the response of governments in the region was inadequate. Had these governments been democratically accountable, they would have responded more quickly and forcefully to boost employment and otherwise cushion the impact of the crises on the poorest members of their societies.Sen, the winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in economic science, has aimed this work at a general audience. For specialists, though, the book offers an extended discussion of methodological issues introduced by Sen's view of development as freedom, more than 50 pages of end notes, and an index of names and subjects. Development as Freedom is one of the most well written books on the value of freedom in society. It touches upon the values economists should emphasize (and often don't) and the errors made in the name of paternalism and a state that lead economic life. Amartya Sen has been assailed as haven written a piece of liberal utopian propaganda, but he does have a valid argument that democracy does have a preventive place in human suffering noting that famines have never occurred within a democracy and states that give women the chance to earn their own livelihood are stronger than those that aren't. Sen perhaps does not devote enough time to the problems with democracy. Democracy cannot and should not be seen as a cure all that will bring wealth and prosperity to the common man. Authoritarian leaders throughout history have starved and brutalized their own people from Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and others. Economic growth may be higher in authoritarian regimes, but that's with tight state controls without the controls the economy plummets and you still have a tired mass of people who may lose jobs. Democracy may be a preferred solution, but I question how realistic such an idea is, considering that democracy requires a preparation period and a democratic willingness from the elites and populace. Without this, democratic efforts will fail. Sen does a decent job of building a case for democracy and freedom, but I question the realism of the idea.

And yet this is the first book that captures the exhausting experience of caring for aging parents, e.g., that it's sometimes gross - (see passages about hoarding, incontinence and "grime") - AND funny - (see "The Wheel of Doom" and Roz Chast's father's obsession with myriad bank books, decades old).* The author's hand-wringing about whether there's going to be enough money to pay for her parents' care is spot on. How long will the money last if they live "X" more years vs. "Y" more years? I do these calculations every month, constantly updating and trying to prepare for the worst. Any savings will be drained by expenses which will have no effect on terminal outcomes. If the daily care and feeding of your parents doesn't kill you - then the avalanche of paperwork and legal stuff that must be done - will.* Hence despite the preference to "talk about something more pleasant," if nothing else, this book demonstrates why planning for our parents' end-of-life care must begin NOW - not later.* I recommend this book for every person who's on the brink of going insane about their aging parents. Give it to caregivers, give it to your siblings, give it to anyone who hates dark subjects - but who can handle them if they're presented in a disarmingly funny style that's accessible - yet still honest. (I don't think I can read another "text-only" book about the "death spiral" of aging parents.)* In sum, "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" takes the hard edges off some things while inflicting blunt-force traumas about others. Roz Chast nails the impending death of our parents in a way that feels like a landmark work. I know such praise sounds silly given the sea of excellent books out there about aging. But I've never seen this subject presented in an original, humorous and touching way, complete with hand-drawn illustrations and color photos. It avoids the trap of being overly optimistic, forcing us to confront the gruesomeness of mortality - while STILL providing an emotional "lift" about something universal.* This book makes going through one of the darkest periods of my life - feel almost worth it.

There is a saying in the Navy: "any ship can be a minesweeper...once." For those of us not in the medical or elder care professions, dealing with our parents' decline and death is an emotional roller coaster; a harrowing experience. One can't be fully prepared for the emotional, physical and financial challenges. People are living longer, many families are smaller and through jobs and choice we are not always living in the same community with our parents. Chast is very honest about not having lived an idyllic childhood and her parents weren't the best (or worst) role models. Most of us try to do the right things for our parents when we become responsible for their care, and I suspect most of us aren't candidates for sainthood.She crafts a caring and candid portrait of two flawed but colorful people who stood together for nearly 70 years in a rock solid marriage. She is also remarkably honest about her own conflicting emotions.Her parents foibles and phobias, hoarding and occasional irrationality clearly drove their daughter to distraction. Still, they lived well into their 90s on their own terms. The sadness of their ultimate physical and mental decline is only partially absolved by their daughter's fulfilling her duty of care and the hard won insights as she comes to terms with and assists them in their final journey..For those of us who have been through this passage, it is a tale well told. For those who have not, buckle up.

This memoir is so honest (brutally so at times I suppose)and so well told with terrific humor, that I must say if you have an aging parent(s)that you are caring for, concerned about, worry about, wonder about or if you recently lost an elderly parent(s)who you took care of, this book let's you know you aren't alone while allowing you a moment or two to laugh (even through tears). Roz Chast expresses feelings that I think many people (certainly I) have felt during this journey - we simply don't voice them and occasionally feel guilty for having the thoughts. It is good to know that the frustration and other feelings you have at times while dealing with a parent (especially one with dementia) is shared. For me, this book was like having drinks with a good friend. I believe, in the end, Roz showed her deep loving connection in her own perfect way via this book. I think it was expressed in a way her mother would have understood even if a few other reviewers didn't.

My very elderly mother died three weeks ago - her decline was protracted, difficult for her and, despite amazingly intimate and sweet moments, her family caregivers existed in a state of intense anxiety throughout. It was scary and exhausting: distance, travel, physical care, house keeping, intermittent medical crises, facility stays, home health aides, daunting equipment, embarrassing supplies, and always always the adjusting to mother's everbdiminishing strength, reduced mobility, increasing deafness. It all took a toll on us and dismayed our mother. "You are too old to be doing all this!" she would say. And she was right. Had I not been able to get home to Roz Chast's unflinchingly honest book I would never have gotten through this exquisitely sensitive and extremely demanding period. I have passed the book, now threadbare and dog eared, on to another daughter and intend to send a copy to my mother's gerontologist. THANK YOU ROZ CHAST!!!

I've been land lording for 35 years and let me tell you that this old dog is learning a few new tricks based on Mike's book. Thanks to Mike's book I am automating my management of real estate. I love the use of the technology incorporated with the proven ideas Mike explains form his years of experience. Mikes experience has every situation I've encountered covered. I just wish I would have known this stuff earlier. I get more time to myself and family without the worry. A must read for anyone owning rental real estate.

I really like this book. Besides for the typos, my one complaint is that sometimes he introduces an idea that I would like to know more about, but he skips over it too fast and it feels like an incomplete idea. Overall though, I do like the book. I have been a landlord for several years and rarely get ideas from books. This one has given me some great ideas that I'm excited to implement.

Mike Butler is a self made Landlord. Beginning investors would do well to heed his advise gained through years of profitable Landlording. Mike with his background in law enforcement and familiarity with single family dwellings offers techniques and strategies that are valuable for beginning and experienced investors that may have become lax in paying attention to details that increase profit and enjoyment of being an Entrepreneurial Investor. If you are just beginning and looking for a way to invest in residential real estate without losing your sanity due to management challenges, this is a resource you should have in your educational library.

This book is probably best for beginners. Since my husband and I have been land-lording seven years now, many of the suggestions in the book we already have done, implemented and adjusted for our business.

Great nuts and bolts overview of processes and procedures to ensure you incorporate in your investment business. Skewed toward single family market heavily, but that is his forte and you can use a lot of the experience for multi family investment operations.
